Why women really do deserve cheap car insurance

Flicking through the paper the other night, I found a story that made my other half howl with laughter. I, on the other hand, didn't find it quite so funny.

The article in question was about how women in Saudi Arabia, who have all been banned from driving for years, were forbidden from using golf carts at a recent cultural festival. Men were allowed to use them, but when it came to the women's day, all the carts were removed and the ladies had to walk.

"Brilliant," my soon-to-be-ex shouted, "No women drivers; they should do that over here and then we wouldn't have any accidents, just think how much safer it'd be."

I refused to rise to his childishness and sent him off to do the ironing, but the disturbing thing is that he actually meant it. He really believes that us girls are bad drivers, and that him and his silly little friends are somehow superior when they get behind the wheel.

I guess the man versus woman debate has been raging for years, and the chances are it's going to keep going until we're all old, grey and wrinkly. But you and I both know the truth, and I reckon all those blokes out there secretly do as well- they're just way too stubborn and proud to admit it.

Not matter how much they argue or many times they have a sulk and throw their toys out of the pram, they're not going to win. Because you, Mrs, have got the facts on your side. So let's check out those facts shall we?

Firstly, cheap car insurance for women. That's got to mean something. There's obviously a reason why our premiums are way cheaper than our menfolk's, and we all know what it is. Official statistics show that men are involved in far more car accidents than women, and you can't argue with statistics now can you.

Early last year the EU attempted to make it illegal to take gender into account when working out the price of a motor insurance policy, but the PC-gone-mad move was blocked at the last minute. If it had gone through, we would've had to kiss goodbye to our women's car insurance discount and instead fork out to cover the folly of male drivers- hardly fair.

There are, in fact, psychological reasons why men are worse drivers and it's nothing to do with their tiny football-obsessed brains, although that probably doesn't help. They're far more likely to take risks when they're driving, thus putting themselves and other road users at risk. I actually used to go out with a bloke who would turn the lights of his car off as he was speeding at night along pitch-black country lanes, 'just to see what would happen'. Note that I said I used to go out with him.

Clinical psychologist and psychotherapist Dr Narendra Kinger tries to give us a clue inside men's heads and says, "Road rage and drunken driving are manifestations of risk-taking. Men are more likely to slip up here, as they are programmed to be more indifferent to the risk factor than women."

The fact that men accounted for 93% of convicted drink-drivers in 2003 backs up what the professionals are saying, and evidence that proves men are three times more likely to die in a car crash goes yet further in confirming our status as the roads' best.

Other statistics that prove our dominance come from research undertaken by road safety charity Brake. According to their findings, 44% of men have used mobile phones while driving, compared with only 30% of women; 20% of men have fallen asleep at the wheel, in contrast to only 6% of women; and 22% of men said they would drive at 7am after a heavy night on the booze, compared to just 11% of women. Maybe men are just more honest, but I doubt it.

Looking at all those facts it really is no surprise that women's car insurance is cheaper. But after looking at all the evidence and statistics, is it actually because we've got better driving skills, or is simply because we don't do stupid things?

It's common knowledge, as much as we try to deny it, that us girls find it harder to parallel park and read maps. This is because we're predominantly right-brained, which means our spatial awareness and ability to visualise three-dimensional space is a little underdeveloped. Despite this, it's fair to say that we're slightly more sensible on the road, we don't consider it a personal affront when a learner driver, a Smart Car or, heaven forbid, a woman, overtakes us, and we're not so easily distracted by the world flashing by outside the window.

One man, who preferred not to be named, was involved in a smash at a junction and when asked to explain what happened, he told his car insurance company, "I had one eye on a parked car, another on approaching lorries, and another on the woman behind."

General Vehicle Maintenance

Regular vehicle maintenance or preventative maintenance, if you will, can go a long way in making sure your vehicle runs at optimal condition. For example, no one truly enjoys the trips to a mechanic because our brake pads are worn down to the rotors or drums and we have to spend more time and dollars to repair the brake system. What little time it takes to make sure we do the "regular" things to our vehicle, makes the time well spent. The pay me now or pay me later cliché, in this case, is never more true. The following tips will aid you in keeping your vehicle ready to take you wherever you have to go.

Enough can't be said about regular oil changes and oil filter replacement. Personally, I have oil changes every 2,000 miles. The recommended schedule is every 3, 000 miles. Because of my prompt attention to regular oil and filter changes, I have a 1978 Buick LeSabre with 195,000 miles on it and in 2006 it still runs like a dream. It should go without saying but a lubing of the chassis or "lube job" some call it, should be performed at the same time you have the oil changed.

The air filter, when dirty, is a common problem when you notice your car has less power and is using more fuel. A simple check of the filter will give you an idea of how dirty it is. Mechanics will almost always agree that this simple step can go a long way in improving your vehicle's performance. Air filters are instrumental in decreasing the amount of dirt, dust and other damaging contaminants going into the engine. Simply put, your vehicle runs less efficiently when the filter is clogged with dirt and grime. Filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles. Also, have the air filter changed when you have an oil change performed on the vehicle to save time or an extra trip to the mechanic.

And while we're talking about filters, the fuel filter is probably the most overlooked or forgotten item for regular checkups. Auto experts don't understand why this happens but it does. Remember the Buick I just mentioned? I have had the fuel pumps and fuel filters checked regularly on that vehicle. I can honestly say I get approximately two more miles to the gallon when I calculate mpg/number of gallons of fuel used after I have replaced a fuel filter. Whenever you happen to notice or think to yourself, "I sure am using more gas lately", check the fuel filter.

Regular replacement of the brake pads is also very important. Many expert mechanics will agree that all parts to the brake system are the most important safety features on an automobile. You must be able to stop your vehicle quickly and safely. All brake pads will wear out eventually. If you start hearing squealing like sounds or the feel of the pedal upon braking is "mushy", you need to consider that the brake pads are beginning to become worn out. The responsibility of the brake pads is to provide friction with the pad to make braking or stopping possible. Brake pads can be easily diagnosed for wear and tear with regular examinations.

Spark plug wires assure that your vehicle is properly operating in a dance with the distributor and ignition coils. Many things can indicate problems and spark plug wire malfunction. There may be corrosion at the wires or connectors. Resistance can increase as the wires get older. The material encasing the wires may be shredding or wearing out.

The first sign of trouble generally comes when you start noticing a missing or stuttering type action when the vehicle is operating. There's a significant tugging like symptom that feels to you that your vehicle can't get the energy to move. Always keep your spark plug wires clean. Always troubleshoot for wires that look worn out or are not properly applied to the spark plugs. Replacing your spark plug wires will mean efficient starting and less ignition type problems that can follow because of worn spark plug wires.

Wash Me! Well maybe this one isn't actually vehicle "maintenance" per se, but doesn't a clean vehicle make you feel better? Again, have you ever noticed the vehicle seems to run smoother when she's clean? Having the engine steam cleaned on a regular maintenance plan can also go a long way in extending the life of your engine. Engine cleaning will keep the corrosion and grime from building up on your spark plug wires too. It will help when you are looking over your engine for leaks, unplugged or loose wiring and keep the corrosion off your vehicle's battery.

While these aren't the only "regular maintenance" tips available, you can always research your vehicle's handbook for other ideas that can help extend its life and keep it running in optimal condition.

MG and Austin to be Revived by Chinese Car Company

The famous MG and Austin brands that were familiar to generations of British car enthusiasts, are about to be revived by Nanjing Automobile Corporation, located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China.

The company purchased the assets of MG Rover last July for 50 million pounds. Those assets included assembly lines, R & D equipment, and several brands of cars.

The project was approved by the Chinese government, so it is expected to go ahead and be in production by early 2007. The first model Nanjing Auto expects to produce will be the MG75. The company expects to produce 200,000 cars, 250,000 engines and 100,000 gearboxes annually.

Another Chinese company, the Shanghai Automobile Industry Corp also recently purchased the property rights for the Rover 75, Rover 25, and related engines. So it looks like these venerable British marques may be revived after years of languishing in bankruptcy limbo.

** Symptomatic of emerging Chinese auto industry

In many ways this revival of older western car models is both a throwback to previous Chinese strategies, and representative of a movement towards a new future. In the past the domestic Chinese auto market was virtually closed to imports in order to protect domestic production and sales of older, outdated and technically inferior cars.

But as the Chinese economy exploded in the last few years, and the size of the middle class has grown exponentially, new consumers with cash were no longer content to drive outdated vehicles. So instead of trying to keep non-Chinese made vehicles out of the country, the Chinese government began allowing imported vehicles into the country as long as the foreign companies were prepared to invest in partnerships with Chinese companies.

** Ramping up automobile production

The result was the creation of one of the world's largest automobile industries where just 15 years ago there was very little production at all. In 1990 the entire vehicle production in China was 42,000 cars. In 2004 the country produced 2.3 million vehicles. And by 2007 their target is to make more than 6 million vehicles overtaking Germany as the third largest vehicle manufacturer in the world.

For the past decade it has been very much a matter of scrambling to meet the huge demand created by the economic miracle that has taken place in China. In other words, the Chinese industry could operate without the competitive and regulatory issues involved in exporting to countries like the U.S., Canada, or Europe.

Those issues are significant. Ironically, the Chinese auto industry lacks the centralized organization that all the major car manufacturers must have in order to compete. Car plants around the world are designed to focus on specific products, be flexible enough to change products when necessary, and are tightly integrated into a sophisticated system of coordination with sister plants and parts suppliers.

All of this requires a level of business, communication, and transportation sophistication that has not yet developed in the rough and ready business world that prevails in China.

** Will China soon be a mass exporter of cars?

The development of significant domestic capacity has led many to assume that China will eventually start saturating the rest of the world with cheap vehicles -- just as they have done with other manufactured goods. Some observers predict that whereas it took Japan 20 years to gain a strong foothold in the U.S., and the Koreans did it in just 10 years, we might expect the Chinese to do it in 5 or even fewer years.

But the already mentioned problems of organization and orientation are significant. While consumers in the U.S., Europe, and Japan may be willing to sacrifice a bit of quality for a lower price, it is not likely that the environmental regulations in these countries will be relaxed to let in cheap vehicles.

There is also serious R&D lag in China. The Japanese and Koreans have been able to capture a sizeable part of the market by producing technologically advanced models and by employing very strict quality control. But neither of these things are yet prominent within the Chinese auto industry.

So while there may be growing production capacity in China in the next few years, it is not clear that this can be easily translated into foreign sales.

Only time will tell.

Famous for its luxury saloon vehicles and sports cars as well, the Jaguar brand is yet another vehicle manufacturer that keeps its aficionados and followers looking forward to the next creation that it would release on the roads and streets. GM 2008 Saturn VUE: Inspired by Opel

General Motors' Saturn division is hard at work on building a replacement for its small SUV, the Saturn VUE. Currently based strictly on U.S. technology, the 2008 VUE is expected to be heavily based on Opel technology: Opel is General Motors' principal European brand. This is good news for those who were concerned that GM would ditch the Saturn VUE. Instead, the SUV will get new life and additional support via its new relationship with Opel. While it is too early to know all the details about the upcoming Saturn VUE makeover, there are some things we do know about this revamped model.

Ever since Saturn released the first "S Series" models back in 1990, the company has struggled to maintain a unique identity. Neglected by parent GM, the upstart Saturn brand had to wait nearly a decade before additional vehicles were added to its line including the Saturn VUE SUV. Along with the "L Series" midsize cars, the three vehicle lines [ION having replace the S Series] fully comprised the Saturn line for several years. Unfortunately, none of the three models were stand out performers, so the brand suffered accordingly.

With the demise of Oldsmobile has come new life for Saturn. Now a fully integrated GM division, Saturn is getting additional vehicles to help beef up its line up. Drawing upon its highly regarded dealer network and high consumer satisfaction scores, Saturn is being quickly remade into a European style division. Saturn has Opel to thank for that.

Along with the coming Aura midsize sedan which is heavily based on an Opel design, the Saturn VUE will be based upon the Opel Antera GTC. An Antera concept has been making the rounds of auto shows across Europe and what we know about the Antera points to what we can expect to see with the VUE.

The Antera is slightly smaller in size than the current Saturn VUE; although the Antera reportedly will have only two doors, the Saturn VUE model will get four doors. Both vehicles are closer in size to the current Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V models, their chief competitors. This smaller size also permits Saturn to introduce a slightly larger 7 passenger SUV next year, the Outlook.

The 2008 Saturn VUE will feature both four and six cylinder gas powered engines. Expect both AWD and RWD to be offered. The Antera's front end will be redone to mesh with the current Saturn look. Beyond that, the VUE will likely incorporate current GM technology with upgraded safety and performance features included. A base price of around $20,000 for the FWD model is likely with fully loaded AWD versions retailing for as high as $30K.

The 2008 Saturn VUE will be built in Spring Hill, TN home of the original Saturn plant. Along with the Outlook, the Aura, the SKY roadster, the RELAY crossover, and the ION compact, new life is being breathed into Saturn thanks to Opel. This is good news for Saturn fans that have loyally supported the automaker since its inception more than 15 years ago.

To be honest, the easier and safer bet is #1. If you end up going to court for the speeding ticket, you are more than likely to walk away having to pay SOMETHING. However, even if you do have to go to court, there are still strategies you can use to get away with the speeding ticket.

First of all, if a police officer pulls you over for speeding, you need to have an entire story that checks out ready to go. If you are going to use someone else in your story, they need to know before-hand that they may one day get a phone call from an officer to check on a story.

Second of all, do NOT be a smart ass - you need to be very polite and look shocked. Sincerity is going to be the main thing here.

Third of all, ASK for the warning instead of ticket. Show a bit of panic and say that you really cannot afford the ticket and that you will be very careful from then on. Sometime, just asking for the warning can make all the difference - it certainly cannot hurt!

Now, if you're caught in position #2 - the best bet is to try to get your court date changed. This means, whatever date they send you - send a reason back why you cannot make it and ask for a change. Many times police officers will not show up to court if they only have 1 or 2 cases - if that happens, you are HOME FREE.
