Nissan, To Unveil Innovative Fuel-cell Technology in 2010

Nissan Motor Co. earlier announced that early next decade it will be introducing fuel-cell technology for the vehicles in Japan and North America. This new venture by the automaker is part of its midterm environmental strategy dubbed as "Nissan Green Program 2010."

Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan chief operating officer said that the company will introduce gasoline engine technologies that will enhance fuel economy and at the same time reduce carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to diesel engine levels. These car technologies will be introduced to the automotive market starting from the fiscal year 2010.

Nissan will also unveil new fuel-cell vehicle with sophisticated fuel stack. Said vehicle will be produced in-house after 2010. Shiga divulged that this new vehicle is aimed at showcasing performance on par with gasoline-power automobiles.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device. It differs from batteries in the sense that the latter are intended for incessant replenishment of the reactants consumed. Further, fuel cells generate electricity from an external supply of fuel and oxidant unlike batteries which have limited internal energy storage capacity. Additionally, fuel cell automobiles run on the power generated when oxygen in the air mixes with hydrogen in the fuel tank. Moreover, the technology produces water vapor, which is not harmful to the environment.

Shiga added that the company intends to concentrate on the internal combustion engine as Nissan's primary power source. The automaker also intends to improve engine efficiency to blend well with Nissan accessories. In addition, Mitsuhiko Yamashita, Nissan's executive vice president for research and development said, "To develop vehicles that are truly environmentally friendly, we need to make significant advances in internal combustion technology while working on electrical power sources in parallel."

Shiga further noted that Nissan intends to develop a "three-liter car," which can travel 100 kilometers or 60 miles using 3 liters or about 3 quarts of gasoline. This car is expected to be introduced to the auto industry in 2010.

Carlos Tavarez, Nissan's executive vice president for product planning and corporate strategy said, "If you have to compensate for the cost of new technologies, you'll find that (gasoline) is very high performance for small cars in terms of balancing the costs for the customer in terms of fuel efficiency. You get high performance and low mileage."

The automaker will also unleash a 100% bioethanol fuel-ready vehicle intended for the Brazilian market by 2009. It will also introduce an electric vehicle starting in Japan early next decade.

Will Toyota Dethrone GM?

Toyota Motor Corp. has dethroned Ford Motor Co. as the second largest automaker around the globe. Now that it is already in the top two positions, critics are saying that Toyota is eyeing the top position and is planning ways to overthrow General Motors Corp. In addition to this, the company has announced its ambitious plan to produce 9.2 million vehicles worldwide in the year 2008.

The soaring oil prices have been a blessing in disguise for the corporation since more drivers turn to fuel-efficient cars. This has made Toyota Camry, Corolla and Prius hybrid a success. Further, due to high demands of said vehicles, Toyota Prius parts as well as that of Camry and Corolla, also make good in the market. GM and Ford, on the other hand, have relied on their sales for larger vehicles. Furthermore, the shift of consumers to small cars made a devastating drop in sales figures.

In the year 2005, Toyota has sold 8.13 million vehicles worldwide. This year it is expected to sell a total of 8.85 million vehicles. According to Shotaro Noguchi, auto analyst with Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co. in Tokyo, "American automakers are in trouble because their products aren't selling." He added that the main challenge is to keep profitability up. "It's a positive and aggressive plan," he said.

Katsuaki Watanabe, Toyota's president, declined to give any statement on the vehicle production for 2008. However, the president noted, ""We are aiming for steady growth through strengthening all our operations."

With these growing sales figures in favor of Toyota, GM through its spokesperson John McDonald said, "We respect our competition around the world, and were realistic about our challenges and opportunities. We know we have to earn the right to maintain our global sales leadership, and were doing that day after day."

Toyota's profit has increased by 39 percent amounting to $3.1 billion in its first fiscal year. On the contrary, GM has lost $3.4 billion in the April-June period.

All about the Porsche 968

The Porsche 968 simply means the legacy of the Porsche 944 gets to live on. In 1991 the 944 S2 was discontinue but the 968 was waiting in the wings to make its debut.

Porsche has been busy working on a replacement model for sometime which originally was going to be called the 944 S3 but with so many new features they thought it was better to actually give it an entire new image.

The 968 coupe has the best balance of any of the Porsche bodies and it has more power than the 944 with the 240 HP off the 3.0 liter engine. The increased HP is partially a result of the Variocam which is a camshaft chain drive that has an adjustable tensioner.

Looking For Car Parts Then and Now!

When I started to drive in my late teens it was customary to buy a banger then spend the next year or so doing it up. First we go down to the car auctions, to get what we thought would be the deal of the year, then after driving it home we would find out exactly what we hade bought and why it was in the car auction in the first place. Of course nothing would dampen my spirits, it was my first car and my first taste of real freedom. So off I would go with close friends to the local scrap yards, where we would walk the old cars scouring for the relevant car parts to make my banger into my dream machine.

Looking back on this experience, it was amusing as nothing was priced, you took your tool kit, removed the parts yourself sometimes in extremely dangerous situations with old cars towering above you. As you took your parts to the man at the gate, he gave you a price off the top of his head as we were young and clearly not in the money, a price would be given that was clearly cheaper than those that turned up in newer cars. Within our toolboxes would be the bolts and little odds and sods we picked up when we were lying on the ground. I had asked once how much these were, but they were never bothered so I always got these for free.

However things have changed now. There are still scrap yards around, but instead of being able to sell your car to the scrap man, when it was off the road, we now have to pay him to take it away for us. New European laws control the disposal of cars and the materials they are built of, making it harder for your typical scrap yard to make money. In fact it is sometime more trouble than it's worth. Gone are the days when they would take in any car, now they look at the car parts value, to see if they should have the car in the yard or not.

However the Internet has come to the rescue as it has with many industries. You can now search for car parts on the web across several if not hundreds of scrap yards at the same time. By typing in your car part requirements into a form, which is then distributed throughout the scrap yards at the same time, you can save yourself time and money. Of course if you get more than one reply you can chose the cheapest price or nearest to get to.

I don't need to search for parts now; it is the turn of my son who of course has got the Internet off to a tee. It may a romantic notion, but it is a shame he can't go through the same phase of searching and then stripping down an old car to make his good. Ironically I think he would enjoy it as much as I did at his age, even I it was more dangerous than I would like to admit.

A new car is a major expense in anyone's language. You only have to consider that what we now spend on an average priced new car is roughly what our parents spent to buy a new house a generation ago. A five or ten percent difference in the price on a purchase of this size can prove very costly.!

So, it's clear that a new car purchase needs to be properly thought through. It's imperative to do your research to ensure you get a great deal. Here are a few tips to help you get that great deal!

Tip #1 ... Take your time. Car dealers thrive on making you think "todays special" will be gone tomorrow. Not true. Make it obvious that you have "all the time in the world" to buy a car. That gives you the upper hand in negotiations right from the start.

Tip #2 ... Do your own research. You have to know a cars real value "before" you go shopping. The internet is a wonderful resource for finding out true car values. You can find out the average retail and wholesale costs of a specific make and model. These two pieces of information are vital to assess a good deal from a dud.

Tip #3 ... Leave some profit for the dealer. They need to make some money on the deal, and you want to pay a fair price. This is where knowing your values are vital. You can often negotiate a price that's maybe only $500 above dealer cost. Any dealer would sooner sell 3 cars a day and make $500 on each than sell one per day and make $1000 on each. You have to know how far you can squeeze them.!

Tip #4 ... Only pay for the options you want. You may have to wait a few weeks for delivery to get exactly what you want, at the price you want. This is much better than "getting $5000 worth of extras for only $2000" if those accessories that are of no use to you.

Tip #5 ... Go car shopping near the end of the month. Most dealerships, and their salespeople, have sales budgets to meet. They'll be much more likely to sweeten the deals near the end of the month to make the months figures look a little better.

Tip #6 ... Negotiate your trade in value seperately. Dealers will always try to cloud the figures by offering you a "cash difference" figure. This just confuses the value being given to each vehicle. Keep it simple, and settle on the new car purchase price first, then negotiate the trade-in value. That way there are no tricks, and each car has a direct value you can assess for yourself.

Tip #7 ... Stick to you assessment of car values. Salespeople undergo a lot of training to enable them to convince you that they are experts and you aren't. Research doesn't lie, but salepeople often do. Back yourself, and walk away from any salesperson that thinks they are smarter than you, or tries to "pull the wool over your eyes".

Tip #8 ... Make sure the car has a great warranty. New cars these days are backed by some outstanding factory warranties. An extra year or two of warranty can be worth both, a lot of money and a lot of peace of mind. You never get a second chance to get a new car warranty, so go for the best you can get. Dealers with top quality cars aren't afraid to warranty them.

Tip #9 ... Ask all your questions up front - even the silly ones. Whatever you do, always read the fine print of the sales contract before signing it. If anything is unclear, ask. Contracts usually contain legal jargon, if you are in any doubt at all about what something means, ask to have it explained before you sign.

Tip #10 ... Take the car for a good, long test drive. Get the feel of the car before you take it home. If you aren't a particularly "mechanical person", get someone who is, to come for a ride with you. Most new cars a in near perfect condition, but if yours isn't, you want to know now, not later. The dealer wants to clinch the deal now, so they'll fix any minor defects immediately. Make sure they do.

People go over the speed limit for different reasons. Let's examine four different kinds of drivers on a Monday morning coming from north, south, east and west of a major interstate highway:

North driver: his 8-1/2 month pregnant wife wakes him up, announcing her contractions are more frequent. She's in pain. Both husband and wife hop into a car and he drives at top speed.

South driver: her parents were fighting... again - something about unpaid debts and frivolous spending. To escape the screaming, she drives off to school, depressing the accelerator in anger.

East driver: "You'll appreciate this car's engineering at high speeds. You ought to take it for a spin to see what I mean. A real fast beauty," was what the salesman said. Beautiful day, he'll put the top down, play the CD, see if the salesman's words are true or just hype.

West driver: 33-year old lawyer has to plead his case in 20 minutes. He should have left 15 minutes ago but his hangover... The judge is rumored to be a stickler for punctuality; if he drives faster, he just might make it on time.

The motivators of speed are what psychologists call stressors: our nation's highways are breeding grounds for stressors. It is wrong to associate teenagers with speeding. Even responsible adults have been issued a speeding ticket at least once in their life. But we can't ignore the statistics about teenagers going at frightening speeds in total abandon. And it is a human frailty that we wait for an accident to happen before taking action.

Car accidents can put the "brakes" on the joys of life because we got busy testing the accelerator to see how far down it could go, and forgetting to step on the brakes. It is when the car is revved up and going at over 130 miles an hour that we savor true "exhilaration." Let's admit it. Didn't we go over the speeding limit more than once when we got our first car? No two ways about it. Speed is a perfect mantra for all those who are tasting freedom for the first time. Our driver's license is far more important than our birth certificate... in a way.

But in many ways, obtaining licenses is more restrictive in California today. Thanks to the revealing statistics of teen driving and collisions, mothers finally rounded up some legislature authorities to push for the Brady Jared Teen Driver Safety Act of 1997. It boils down to making it harder - and longer - to obtain a permanent driver's license. This Act was passed in honor of Brady Grasinger of southern California and Jared Cunningham who both died in a car wreck.

Brady was 15, Jared 14. It is not clear if speeding caused the collision, but think of it this way: if speed was not part of the equation, both drivers would have had time to control their vehicles and avert an accident. Speed is exhilarating, definitely, a clear sign of individual freedom, but it translates into exorbitant speeding tickets and worse, accidental death.

When Governor Pete Wilson signed the Brady Jared Teen Driver Safety Act of 1997, the teens protested, but the parents rejoiced. The desired result of the Act was to reduce the number of teen driving accidents in California - statistics prove that 16 year olds are four times more likely to get into a car accident.

The desired result was achieved. Teen accidents went down by 23% according to transportation officials. If other states pick up the California initiative, the number of speeding tickets would decrease significantly. If this Act succeeds in effectively tempering teens and teaching them proper freeway driving, then the freeways would be safer and parents can sleep better at night... without having to crack their knuckles white and turning into insomniacs...

Somehow, your engine just would not start. You are stumped and you surely would not know what to do now. Well, there are a couple of things that could be the cause why your engine would not start when you try to turn it on.

Usually, when you start a car, you would hear a cranking sound. If you do not hear the sound, it actually means that your starter is not working. The "check engine" light should also be turned on when you start your car. You see, it actually indicates that the engine computer is powered. Once the ignition is turned on, you would actually hear a buzzing sound on the fuel pump which actually emanates from the gas tank area. The first impact of a speeding ticket is going to be felt in your wallet. Gone are the days of tickets not costing all that much to pay. Today you are lucky if a ticket costs you less than a hundred dollars. This needs to be paid in full by a certain date or there will be consequences. The penalty for not paying a ticket can be quite severe. You could be hit with an extra fine or even lose your driver's license for a set period of time. If you lose your license it can make you life very difficult. How will you get to work? How will you get to the store to buy groceries?

In some states you can choose to pay a lesser fine for your speeding ticket and take traffic school. Traffic school is not free. The cost varies but it usually isn't cheap

If you do not have traffic school and want to try to keep the ticket off of your record one of your only other choices is to get legal representation. There are many car clinics advertised that are supposed to keep a speeding ticket off your record.

Many times this involves paying a lawyer at least $100 to take the ticket to court. The lawyer usually tries to keep pushing back the court date until the officer is unable to make it to testify.

If you cannot afford a lawyer but still think you can beat the ticket you can go to court yourself. To do so you need to contact the courthouse and set up a court date. This will again take time away from your family or your job to fight the ticket. Unless you have a real good excuse or decent lawyer it is hard to get the ticket thrown out. Even if you are able to beat it you most likely will have to pay court costs.

Each driving infraction is assigned a certain point value. The more points you have the worse your driving record reads. Certain traffic violations give you more points.

If you are going extremely fast in the eyes of officer that pulled you over you may receive a reckless driving ticket. This type of ticket is usually assigned a high value of points and can really make your insurance rates go through the roof.

If your insurance guidelines determine you have too many points they may decide to not renew you when your policy comes up. Even worse they might decide to cancel your policy altogether and now you will have to find another insurance company before you can drive your vehicle. It can really affect your work and other aspects of your life if you are without an insurance policy.

A traffic ticket for speeding can cost you a lot. Not only are you out the time it took for the officer to issue you the ticket. You are losing money on the price of the ticket, the traffic school you had to take or the lawyer you had to hire to get the ticket dismissed.

If the ticket goes onto your driving record you insurance rates could be raised. If you do not take care of the ticket properly you could be out of a driver's license which will soon put you out of a job if you cannot get to work. You've probably either seen people advertising them or you may have even looked into buying cars through auto auctions. But my bet is that is about as far as you have gotten. I only say that because if you are like me and 95% of America you were pretty quickly turned off by either hearing or reading the words "MUST HAVE A DEALER LICENSE TO PARTICIPATE." Let me tell you I was turned off in a major way.

I mean who wants to pay the government for the right to do yet another thing under their complete control? According to our recent poll, the rising cost of fuel has caused many families and individuals to restrain from driving habits that we've been so accustomed to. Before the fuel cost skyrocketed we wouldn't think twice about hopping in our car for a 50 or 60-mile trip, perhaps to a zoo or other recreational area for a leisurely Sunday outing with our families.

But by the statements of those who responded to our poll, it appears that these leisurely drives are being limited or in some cases, families are simply staying home more.

In order to combat his high fuel expense, M. Cooper from Saint Louis Mo, a consultant that drives 20,000 mile plus per year recently traded in his Ford Taurus for a new Honda Civic that gets 41mpg.

Another consumer stated the fuel prices have drastically changed their life style, they've quit going out to dinner, going to the movies and even cancelled their vacation plans. What once cost him 42.00 to fill up his truck, now cost $110.00. We have a lot less money than we did before this all started. We've drastically reduced the amount of driving, only when necessary and have attempted to combine trips, we do not do any extra driving unless it is for school or work, so we stay home much more and do not have extra money NOW!

What ever your thoughts and opinions are for the recent climb in prices, I think it's clear that until the prices come down, the majority of the everyday working class people will be forced to continue to deprive themselves of even the most basic luxuries.

While we can't control the price per gallon, we can at least follow a few basic guidelines and reduce our cost, albeit a minimum amount, but at $3.00 per gallon, even a minimum amount will help our pocketbooks.

1. Set the tire pressure to the recommend psi as per the tire placard or label of your vehicle. (Always adjust tire pressure with cold tires)

2. Avoid excessive idling times, such as warming your car up in the mornings (It serves no purpose anyway)

3. Instead of going thru the drive thru at fast food chains, go inside to order. This will of course avoid excess idling while in line.

4. Remove any excessive weight from the trunk or bed of your truck (This doesn't include over weight spouses either)

5. Remove luggage racks for aerodynamic reasons.

6. Make sure the steering and suspension system end is aligned properly, a mis-aligned steering system will cause excessive drag and reduce fuel mileage.

7. Use Cruise Control while driving at highway speeds.

8. Reduce your speed by 5mph, this may be the biggest saver of all, and if you think about it, 5mph will not get you to your destination much quicker. (Just be prepared for 1 finger hello's and horn honkers)

9. Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained, especially the air filter. If your check engine light is on, have it corrected as soon as possible, it could be a defective sensor or other mechanical fault that will severely impact fuel mileage. Always use the proper grade of engine oil as well, the wrong grade can impact fuel mileage by 1% or more.

10. Avoid jackrabbit starts and aggressive driving habits.

While the above tips may not be new, they certainly bear not just repeating, but adhering to as well. And with the cost of fuel at record highs, we need all the help we can muster.
